There is a way in which the ending to Infinite Jest that pissed me off is exactly like Wallace's suicide. The questions were not answered; it was not the right time for an end; the narrative voice just ceases.
Had not thought about his life in the Wonder Boys community as contributing to his despair; I was too busy envying the creative support I often wish I had experienced, the way I sometimes envy people with a stronger sense of entitlement than my own. But it is obvious that the hothouse made Wallace's writing strangely hollow, despite his reputation as a compassionate and encouraging teacher.
