Well, again, I don't mind the slow-start narrative, although it's a contributing factor. The thing that completely turned me off is that there is so much stuff that isn't so much content-free as it is someone else's content. I have the patience for a hundred pages of meandering novelty, but when it's largely populated by jokes that I've heard a dozen times or cultural stories repeated without reinterpretation... as someone above said, it feels like hazing.

I've read DFW's shorter work and it does not have this fatal flaw, merely the quirks that I was willing to live with. I might even say I enjoyed his shorter works.
