Well, as I said, the slow plot development wasn't a deal breaker; I'm used to that. I'm used to having to piece together backstory, and indeed the footnotes for the part that I have read did a good enough job that I didn't find this an issue. The Kindle lets me immediately look up words I don't understand, and the wordiness is... just his style.

My biggest concern is that he seems to have taken every common chestnut and anecdote and thrown them in when he has nothing better to say. An expurgated version, even if it was 2000 pages long, would be much more appealing. A 40 page diversion is just fine... but a 40 page diversion that was written by someone else and appropriated without credit? Not so much.

I am curious where the plot goes, but I don't care to read a summary or skip to the end. Perhaps someday I will pick it up again and read some more, but I feel like an editor should have put big red Xes through the content that DFW stole from others and left a much more compact book that contained all of his unique style. As it is now, I find it impossible to read because at least 1/4 of it I feel that I have read before (and in fact have).
